Focussing on decision confidence, I am interested in exploring the independent and interactive effects of multiple sources of uncertainty over the course of the learning period in decision making tasks. By parsing out the different sources of noise in a decision, we can begin to conceptualise decision confidence as the product of more than one kind of uncertainty. Using a combination of behavioural tasks and computational modelling I am aiming to elucidate how information across different levels of uncertainty is prioritised across the learning curve. This also informs on whether different cognitive strategies are employed by individuals under different kinds of uncertainty. These investigations may shed light on the mechanisms which lead to the variability of reported confidence judgements and ultimately could inform the ongoing debate regarding the Bayesian optimality of human perception and decision-making.
